Cursa de Dolls
The Cursa de Dolls is one of the most singular and best-loved traditions of the Festa Major d’Estiu (summer festival) of Cadaqués. The event recalls the days when the village women would go to fetch water from the springs and carry it in a doll, the characteristic green earthenware pitcher of Cadaqués, balanced on top of the head.
Participants must complete a short route along the Passeig carrying the doll full of water on their head, resting on a corull or carull, a cloth ring that acts as a cushion. During the race the doll may not be held with the hands: you have to keep your balance, walk briskly and make sure it does not fall. Traditionally there are children’s events and races for women and men, as well as an exhibition lap featuring the giants (gegants) of Cadaqués.
You do not need to be from Cadaqués to take part, but it is highly advisable to practise beforehand with a lighter vessel and to learn to walk with your back straight, your gaze ahead and short steps. For the registration conditions, the categories and the availability of dolls, you should check with the Cadaqués Tourist Office. In the 2026 programme, the exhibition will begin on 5 September at 18.00 h, at the entrance to the village, and the race will take place straight afterwards on the Passeig, together with the tug-of-war.
